Project descriptions
Hypertension causes grave concern worldwide for its high prevalence and severe impact on patients’ everyday life. Patients now mainly rely on hypotensor like Lipitor to alleviate symptoms which, however, comes along with heavy financial burden.
Propionate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) has been discovered to induce vasodilatation, producing an acute hypotensive response .This year, using synthetic gene oscillator and rate-limiting enzyme of propionate synthesis, iGEM-HUST is building drug delivering E. Coli which can periodically release propionate periodically in patients’ intestine periodically. Given the fact that blood pressure of hypertension patients would change periodically throughout the day, we hope to lower the blood pressure when at its peak, and not to cause hypotensive when at its nadir.
Our work shows a new method to cope with hypertension. This method may help tens of thousands of hypertension patients to get rid of heavy drug expenditure.
