Because of our biosafety level 1 standing, our project poses no threat to public or environmental safety. The organisms and all products present no possibility of harming the outside population and ecosystem. Our iGEM team and faculty mentors, find no foreseeable public health threat associated with the organisms. The only safety issue associated with our new BioBrick parts is researcher safety in testing the parts. We have documented our standard operating procedures above, which other teams can reference if they want to use our parts. There is not a biosafety committee at Glendale Community College. However, we do ask our advisors before changing any procedures in the lab. | Because of our biosafety level 1 standing, our project poses no threat to public or environmental safety. Overview
All work was conducted in a biosafety level (BSL) 1 laboratory: this means that the strains we are using (Escherichia coli DH5a and Deinococcus Radiodurans) are non-pathogenic and well-characterized.All members of our team were required to attend biosafety training that was conducted by Dr. Tuohy and Dr. Ziemba. Our general lab practices are listed below:
1.When in the lab, all members are required to wear lab coats and goggles when performing experiments.
2.All flammable liquids were kept in a cabinet labeled for flammable storage.
3.We had waste containers that were specified for biohazard waste, general waste, and biohazard sharps.
Safety Concerns
Because of our biosafety level 1 standing, our project poses no threat to public or environmental safety. The organisms and all products present no possibility of harming the outside population and ecosystem. Our iGEM team and faculty mentors, find no foreseeable public health threat associated with the organisms. The only safety issue associated with our new BioBrick parts is researcher safety in testing the parts. We have documented our standard operating procedures above, which other teams can reference if they want to use our parts. There is not a biosafety committee at Glendale Community College. However, we do ask our advisors before changing any procedures in the lab.
We think that a safety page should continue to be required for the wiki. It should be necessary for all teams to explain their safety practices. Perhaps a required training process through IGEM to insure that everyone is at the same level when it comes to safety.
