Learn About Our Project

Leather dehairing is the main process involved in removing the noncollagenous constituents of rawhide prior to tanning. Conventionally, chemicals have been used for dehairing process. Unfortunately, these chemicals are toxic to the environment. Furthermore, many enzymes that can be used for dehairing must be heated to achieve optimal activity levels. Our project aims to make the tanning industry more environmentally sustainable by making a cost-effective enzymatically based dehairing system.
