Human Practice

Survey

At University Festival

We send out questionnaires for 100 men in all at our exhibit of school festival.

Results

The respondents were mainly students and parents of children who participated in our experience. Most of citizens in Hokkaido didn't know what is iGEM. More than half of respondents have bad images for gene recombination. By our presentation, many citizens have changed their images for gene recombination. Almost half of respondents didn't know about DNA correctly. By our presentation, most of respondents could understand what is DNA.

Observations

  1. iGEM is little known in citizens.
  2. Next year, iGEM will greet 10th anniversary. We want people to know what is iGEM, in order to this, it needs to appeal to the mass media strongly.
  3. A lot of people have prejudice for gene recombination. However, the technology of gene recombination itself is not wrong. In common with other technologies, it's the matter how to use them. By educating to people, we should discuss how to use them.
  4. By our activities of human project, we can let people change their opinion. We don't know whether we can let people change their minds exactly, nevertheless we find it's important to go on information transmission step by step.

At Highschool

High school students no more knew about iGEM than citizens. We should act to make iGEM famous.

All students were interested in iGEM activity and synthetic biology. There may be students who were attracted research activities mainly composed of under graduate students.

More than half students have good impression about gene recombination, but one third of students have bad impression. We should improve such an image.

We could change their mind because we explained how we take care of safety, and diverse usability of gene recombination.

By our lecture, they understood “what is gene recombination?" More than half students wanted to participate in iGEM activity. We hope they join us when become a university student.

Students' Comments.

Image of gene recombination.
  1. Gene recombination is used at breeding plants.
  2. Escaped gene modified animals can affect environment.
  3. It is useful for our life.
  4. Gene modified food can harm our health.
  5. This technology might have both merit and demerit.
  6. Using this technology, we can gain strong plants. However, its safety may not enough.
  7. Snack food packages often say "Non gene modified." Because of that, I thought gene recombined foods damage our health.
  8. Gene recombination is more useful than selective breeding, because we can gain improved phenotype immediately when we use the technology.
