One of the novelties of our project this year is its potential for immediate application. Because of our collaboration with Ecovative, our research will be implemented directly upon its conclusion and will improve both Ecovative’s biodegradable material and the company’s production process. However, our work's utilization in a consumer product requires a focus on the safety concerns regarding the release of our genetically modified organism into the environment and its impact on a growing market. To address these concerns, we worked closely with Ecovative and discussed our project in great detail with environmental activists, small business owners, scientific researchers, and several other communities that have an interest or will be affected by our research.
