'''16 enthusiastic [http://www.kuleuven.be/english KU Leuven] students''' who don’t mind working the whole summer join hands to kick some ass, iGEM style. It’s a very diverse [[Team:KU Leuven/Team | team]] consisting of students with different backgrounds. There are 10 guys and 6 girls present with backgrounds in biochemistry, (bio-)engineering, medicine, philosophy and others. The team is supported by former iGEMers and employees from all levels of the KU Leuven.

[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphid Aphids], the little green plant-sucking bugs, can pose serious threats to a farmer's proceeds. Not only physical damage caused by the sucking is a problem, but aphids also transmit harmful virusses to the plants. The magnitude of loss is difficult to quantify as it changes with Aphid species, crop species, location, year and other factors. The use of insecticides is contested, as it has a negative effect on the natural predators and aphids grow resistant. That's why we, the KU Leuven iGEM 2013 team, decided to do something about it using an insecticide-free controlling mechanism. With E.coligy: Plants with BanAphids we will teach E.coli cells to hack into insects signaling systems to drive of the aphids and attract the natural predators, such as the ladybug.

Our iGEM project will be called '''‘E. coligy: Plants with BanAphids’''', a bacterial strain which can fight the problem of '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphid aphids]''' in your garden and on crops. The proposed strain will secrete '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pheromone pheromones'''] which will repel aphids and attract ladybugs, the natural enemies of aphids. This new approach through genetically modified bacteria can reduce the use of harmful insecticides in the future.

Secret garden

Congratulations! You've found our secret garden! Follow the instructions below and win a great prize at the World jamboree!

  • A video shows that two of our team members are having great fun at our favourite company. Do you know the name of the second member that appears in the video?
  • For one of our models we had to do very extensive computations. To prevent our own computers from overheating and to keep the temperature in our iGEM room at a normal level, we used a supercomputer. Which centre maintains this supercomputer? (Dutch abbreviation)
  • We organised a symposium with a debate, some seminars and 2 iGEM project presentations. An iGEM team came all the way from the Netherlands to present their project. What is the name of their city?

Now put all of these in this URL:https://2013.igem.org/Team:KU_Leuven/(firstname)(abbreviation)(city), (loose the brackets and put everything in lowercase) and follow the very last instruction to get your special jamboree prize!
