Results Overview

Until the regional jamborre in Lyon we were able to create xx BioBricks and devices, have successfully transformed and selected xx trangenic GM-mosses. Different effectors were characterized as a recombinant protein which were produced in E. coli but also as transformation in our moss Physcomitrella patens. Beside these activities we contributed to the progress of the iGEM community by writing a software tool for the annotation of BioBricks and we also wrote tutorials to conserve the knowledge we have gathered during this summer for subsequent generation of iGEM students. Furthermore we developed a concept based on swimming triangular pods how our PhyscoFilter could be implemented into rivers and analyzed the economic potential of this innovative technology in our Entrepreneurship section.

BioBricks

During the summer the team has created xx BioBricks which can mainly be grouped into BioBricks enabling Physcomitrella patens as chassis, Phytoremediation BioBricks and a light triggered kill-switch.

Effectors

We chose for six different effector proteins which we have produced recombinantly in E. coli to characterize them on a molecular level concerning stability and activity.

Moss Experiments

As at our university no research group works with Physcomitrella patens we had to make some general experiment with this moss concerning tolerace of toxin, growing properties on different surfaces and the determination of growth rates.

GM-Moss

In our project we created 25 different strains of stabily transformated moss. This was done 350 km away in Freiburg and we then selected and regenerated transgenic moss over 4 weeks and tested several of them in 96-well plates.

Software

Protein coding BioBricks are an important class in the Parts Registry. As they are standardized by definition our AutoAnnotator translated the sequence computes parameters, does alignments and gives a formated table as output.

Tutorials

During the summer we learned a lot about iGEM and found solutions for problems which appear in many iGEM projects. So we want to share this knowledge for the benefit of the community. Therefore we created our tutorial section (Read more).

Implementation

As soon as transgenic moss with an phytoremediation activity is available it becomes necessary to develop a solution of how to implement a SynBio waterfilter into the environment. For this purpose we present a concept of swimming triangular pods (https://2013.igem.org/Team:TU-Munich/Project/Implementation Read more]).

Entrepreneurship

Science is an extremely important point for progress but in the end it is essential to developp a business model oppon which a the technology can be brought to market (Read more).
