Chemical reasoning

For the maturation of enterobactins in E. coli, 6 enzymes are required: EntA, EntB, EntC, EntD, EntE and EntF.

  • EntA, B and C are involved in the conversion of chorismic acid into 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB).
  • EntD, E and F catalyze the amide linkage of DHB to L-serine.

Three molecules of the DHB-Serine are required for an intermolecular cyclization, thus yielding enterobactin. To conlude, the production of those 6 enzymes can thus become a rate-limiting-step, when it comes to mass enterobactin production.


For now, we consider each one of these steps as a simple chemical reaction:

We are using the enzymatic kinetic model of Michaelis-Menten, which divides each reaction into two consecutives steps:

Enterobactin production kinetiks

The enterobactin's pathway is divided into 4 steps:

In Escherichia-coli, NAD+, NADH and H+ are considered abundant: their concentration will not be affected much by the reaction.
